Safari highlights in short
Only a few tourists visit the national parks in southern Tanzania and those who do are guaranteed to be rewarded with an unbelievably diverse flora and fauna as well as spectacular landscape impressions. During the safari you traverse the Selous/Nyerere National Park by 4×4, explore the park on foot, and cruise along the palm-fringed Rufiji River by boat keeping an eye out for hippos or crocodiles. Despite its’ small size, the Mikumi National Park allows for great wildlife viewing. The Great Ruaha River meanders scenically through Ruaha National Park, where the flora and fauna of eastern and southern Africa intersect. Mighty baobab trees characterize the landscape here.

Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Dar es Salaam
Transfer to the hotel.
Overnight: Sleep Inn, or similar (-/-/-)
Day 2: Drive to Selous / Nyerere National Park
This is Africa’s largest national park which is still considered an insider tip and is not as overrun with visitors. In the late afternoon you will partake on a boat tour on the Rufiji River (possibly together with other guests of the camp) and observe numerous birds, crocodiles and hippos.
Overnight: Selous Kinga Camp, or similar (B/-/D)
Day 3: Selous / Nyerere National Park
During an extensive game drive, you will partly follow the course of the Rufiji and its numerous loops, in the vicinity of which many animals prefer to inhabit. In addition to elephants, Selous/Nyerere is also home to the rare painted wild dogs as well as crocodiles, hippos, buffalo, giraffes, kudus and around 440 bird species.

Day 4: Selous / Nyerere National Park
The morning will be spent walking with an armed ranger who will explain to you the tracks and behavior of the different animals. With a bit of luck, you might spot giraffes, zebras, gazelles, warthogs, monkeys and a number of birds close up. Afterwards, you will cross the national park on a game drive to reach your lodge near Kisaki in the evening.

Day 5: Uluguru Mountains / Mikumi
The spectacular scenery of the Uluguru Mountains forms the backdrop to today’s drive to Mikumi. A number of small villages along the way offer a glimpse of everyday life in rural Tanzania.

Day 6: Mikumi National Park
Full day game drive exploring Mikumi National Park. There are four vegetation zones with over 1200 species of plants, 400 species of birds and 60 species of mammals, including lion, elephant, buffalo and eland.

Day 7: Ruaha National Park
Drive via Iringa to your lodge near Ruaha National Park.

Day 8 & 9: Ruaha National Park
Two full day game drives in Ruaha NP. Here, in the largest national park in Tanzania, the flora and fauna of eastern and southern Africa overlap, resulting in a unique diversity of species. In addition to elephants, lions and giraffes, you can also see kudu, sable and roan antelope, if you are lucky! There is a wide variety of vegetation zones ranging from open grasslands to swamps and miombo forests. Mighty baobab trees also characterize this impressive landscape. Acacia and fig species, tamarind and palm trees can be found along the riverbanks and numerous hippos and crocodiles can be spotted in the Great Ruaha River. Ruaha has also one of the largest elephant populations in East Africa!

Day 10: Departure
Morning gamedrive in Ruaha NP and transfer to Msembe Airstrip for your flight back to Dar es Salaam. Return flight home or, connecting flight e.g., Zanzibar. (B/-/-)

Sure-footedness, an average physical condition, climate tolerance (for the safari walk), team spirit and the willingness to sacrifice comfort during long journeys in a non-airconditioned safari vehicle over partly poor roads and tracks.
